Applications
- SOFC Interconnects
- High Temperature
- Ducting and Manifolds
- Bipolar Plates
Products
Nickel Alloys
Nickel alloys find applications in both low and high temperature fuel cells for their resistance to aqueous corrosion, molten salt corrosion, high temperature oxidation and excellent strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Common applications are bipolar plates/current collectors and balance of plant components such as high temperature fuel reformers, containment structures and heat exchangers.
Stainless Steel
The combination of strength, corrosion resistance, manufacturability and wide commercial availability exhibited by stainless steels result in their application in most types of fuel cells. Ferritic stainless steels are often specified for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) interconnects due to a unique combination of oxidation resistance and thermal compatibility with the brittle ceramic components which make up the active region of the SOFC. Austenitic stainless steels find application as bipolar plates in PEM fuel cells, where high corrosion resistance and surface conductivity are required and in molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC), where resistance to attack by molten salts is needed. The basic properties of austenitic stainless steels also make them useful for balance of plant applications.
